While Bette Starnes’ generosity with the Community Foundation began quietly when she established a fund designated for the Quincy Humane Society, it did not end there.
After Bette passed away January 5, 2014 and with permission of her advisors, the Community Foundation announced that she had left a $3 million bequest. A portion of this gift established the Alzheimer’s Association Endowment benefiting its Quincy chapter. Bette wanted to support the Alzheimer’s Association in appreciation for the assistance it provides to those affected by the disease.
Bette was a kind, generous woman who enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a private person, who liked traveling and fishing. She also had a strong passion for animals and channeled this love into the Bette J. Starnes Fund for the Quincy Humane Society, a fund she had established with the Community Foundation in 2009 and which she added to with a portion of her bequest.
Because Bette looked forward when she considered giving back, her kind-hearted spirit spurred her to create a permanent legacy that is supporting the causes that mattered to her.
