Jimmie (Jim) Hiland was said to have “pitched a perfect game of life.”
Jim was born in Augusta, Illinois and graduated from Augusta High School as a standout high school athlete, lettering in all sports. He went on to attend Western Illinois University and after his freshman year, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954 as a pitcher. He stayed with the Cardinals from 1954-1959. Jim was then called to serve his country in the US Army, and continued to play baseball during that time.
After the Army, Jim and his wife, Janice, moved to St Louis and later Quincy where Jim became a familiar face around many schools, serving as an umpire and referee for baseball/softball, basketball, and volleyball.
“Jim was a good family man. He was a good Christian man,” said his wife, Janice. “He was involved in church in many ways and supported the youth in any way he could.”
Following Jim’s passing, his family decided to start the Jimmie (Jim) Hiland Memorial Fund to support students at his alma mater, Southeastern High School, who are interested in participating in sports by ensuring that finances and the cost of participating in sports would not become a barrier for student athletes.
“He would be honored that this scholarship is in his memory and that it supports kids’ passion for sports,” said Janice.
