Joe Warford established the 2nd Lt. Albert C. Warford, Jr. Fund to honor his oldest brother, Albert. Albert Warford joined the National Guard at the age of 25 in April of 1941. He was killed during World War II, in Emden, Germany in late 1943.
Albert enjoyed playing basketball for his church league and at the YMCA with his other brother, Norman. Because their father had no job after the closing of his paper mill, the Warford boys could not afford to get YMCA memberships. However, Joe’s 4th grade teacher urged him to go see the director at the YMCA. His teacher also told Joe that someone could support their memberships. “The YMCA director was wonderful with us boys,” Joe said. The 2nd Lt. Albert C. Warford, Jr. Fund not only benefits the Quincy Family YMCA, it continues to celebrate the life of Albert Warford.
