Childhood stories often find their beginnings in places that hold meaning and magic. For Sam Calvert, those tales were woven within the walls of the Canton (MO) Public Library. Sam’s mother, Jean Calvert, and several close acquaintances shared an interest in knowledge. And, what better place to learn than being surrounded by writers, poets, and artists at the local library.
"I started this fund in memory of my mother, my high school English teacher, Ruth Schryver, and Mary Morris, who was the librarian when I was a kid,” expressed Sam. “I think public libraries are important to their communities and I hope you will support this one."
It is said that a library, especially in rural communities, is more than books and computers. A library is a place where individuals go to explore, interact, and imagine. Libraries educate individuals and foster thoughtful communities. They are essential components of communities—worth fighting for and worth funding. Which is why, after Jean’s passing, Sam decided to start the Canton Public Library Fund. In his mother’s memory, the endowment fund will help ensure the future sustainability of the library.
Mary Kay Lane, Director of the Canton Public Library, dreams of every child creating their own cherished library memories, much like Sam did. “We want every child to have the same fond memories of the library as Sam did when he was young,” said Lane. “We have big dreams for the library and we’d like to see those dreams come to fruition. With an endowment fund, a reliable source of grant dollars will allow us to increase our community outreach and programming efforts."
The Canton Public Library Fund will provide general support for the library in the form of annual grants. Together, we can kindle curiosity, champion exploration, and ensure that this cherished haven continues to inspire and uplift generations to come.
